MSL | Miss Salon London | MSLondon ... and 2016!

We closed off 2016 with an epic year-end party. But then again that’s what we’ve said about every party. EPIC. Check out the pics as proof of how awesome it was.

This is a time to look back, pause and reflect. We are thankful for everything. And I mean everything – the super lows and the dizzy highs. We’ve experienced so much in this long and tough year; but it’s brought us closer together, made us stronger, tougher and just better at what we do.

We started 2016 riding the wave of the successful launch of MSLondon Cosmetics from within our salons and feeling optimistic that our long nights of planning and work would be rewarded.

On the practical end and to keep up with demand - Natasha our Formulator was mixing more minerals than ever before in her lab in Washington DC, Hamida and Ego were constantly packing and labelling, myself and Linda were selling, selling, selling. On the planning end we worked on packaging, branding, customer feedback, better processes, logistics and distribution. We decided on Woolworths – a retailer that resonates with our brand of affordable luxury. We were set on having our outstanding mineral makeup retail in Woolworths and after a meeting with them in Cape Town in February, first an outright rejection that forced us to rethink our distribution plan then an unexpected email in July saying yes! Now MSL Cosmetics retails as part of the beauty counter at Woolworths in Mall of Africa. We introduced new packaging, better jars and the makeup is flying off the shelves. We close 2016 riding the MSLondon Cosmetics wave of success.

Miss Salon London – our beautiful boutique nail and beauty bars - now boasts a third salon in one of the most beautiful shopping centres there is, Menlyn Maine Central Square, Pretoria. We excitedly visited the site when it was under construction ready to call Pretoria home to MSL. As with any build, this didn’t come easy because the shop wasn’t complete on time with many quality issues but we remained resilient in the face of what at times felt like insurmountable obstacles. The experience taught us that as partners we are stronger together, to keep going and ploughing through challenges and that the right people are worth waiting for.

What a year! As our CEO Ego said to the team “If you want the best nails in town, come to Miss Salon London. If you want the best makeup in the world, come to Miss Salon London. We couldn’t have done it without the commitment and dedication of each and every member of our MSL FAMILY who help make the brand what it is”

Here’s to Miss Salon London! Here’s to 2016! Here’s to you!

The Voice Angola's Epic Pretty Party

So far the month of January has kept us busy and excited about whats still to come.
Its only the second week of Jan and already our Parkhurst salon has hosted a Pretty Party of continental proportions. The talent search show, The Voice, is coming to SA screens in 3 weeks and there is much anticipation. So you can imagine how thrilled we were when Angolan superstar Yola Semedo, mentor and judge on The Voice Angola, chose to treat the contestants that she is mentoring to a Pretty Party.
And not just any Pretty Party. The entire experience was captured on camera as part of the show. Each mentor was asked to choose a bonding experience for them and the contestants under their guidance and an MSL experience was right up there for Yola.

I was between hairstyles opting to wrap my resting hair while I spent the day preparing for the party in that sweltering heat by sorting out the meal and drink requirements for our guests. And that had to be the day Ego decided to braid her hair sitting in Abina's air-conditioned hair salon when we had one of our regular meetings. The excitement for the pretty party was palpable. Marc, Ego and I were all set to roll. It had to be perfect.

Right on que, the camera crew arrived just before 7pm to prepare for the arrival of Yola and her contestants. She is a beautiful, gracious and generous woman towards everyone around her. She said "I always stay in Sandton whenever I'm in Johannesburg and I never miss a chance to visit Miss Salon London to do my nails". With fans like her, Angola is definitely due a visit. Yola and her group of 6 were treated to our signature manicures and pedicures to get them stage ready for the friday live show which was shot in Joburg. The night had so much flavour and filled with laughter because to communicate we were gesticulating and learning from each other. Our nail technicians can proudly say they picked up a bit of Portuguese.

There wasn't a quiet spot in the entire shop. The glamour pods were just as busy with our charming make up artist, Karabo, in her element. She colour matched and gave the girls a makeover with MSL mineral makeup. By the end of the night they had taken countless selfies with the pouts to match.

The whole MSL team was outstanding.
Good luck to all of them. Thank you Yola. Mcwah!

HAPPY 2016!!!

Azania Mosaka Here's to an action packed and fulfilling year to you all. I think its fair to say that the festive season was a well-earned and deserved break because 2015 was certainly relentless. The entire Miss Salon London team wishes you a fabulous year ahead. And a big thank you for always choosing us. New Year well wishes can be so hollow sometimes and full of empty pleasantries in spite of our best intensions. They reminds me of the pleasantries you always hear people exchange and we often feel obliged to say things like "Lets do lunch soon" because it sound pleasant. Perhaps that's a good place to start for the new year, a resolution to try an engage more deeply, meaningfully and honestly. So let me go ahead and say what I really want to say as I wish you a happy new year with the help of a meme I recently came across. It simply said "To my friends, I wish you peace, love and health. Blah, blah, blah…screw that! I wish you lots of sex, booze, orgasms and hope you win the lotto". LOL! That one really made me laugh.
Resolutions are a big one too right now because we use the festive season to reflect on our lives. I'm certainly guilty of entertaining the idea of resolutions with disclaimers that say "No pressure" and "Subject to change" because as information changes so is our tendency to change our minds. Here are a few quotes that stood out to me that I though would be good to live by, for now.

“You have 365 new blank pages. What will you write on the first blank page?” Lailah Gifty Akita. Wonderful words that suggest an adventure awaits you every single day. So lets find the confidence to climb to new heights.

And as you aim for your goals this year remember the words of Ayn Rand - "The question isn't who is going to let me, it's who is going to stop me". Be unstoppable ladies!

And lastly "We must let go of the life we have planned, to accept the life that is waiting for us" - Joseph Campbell. That has healing connotations for me and signifies letting go of what was, to embrace what is to be. So make it your own.

Cheers to a gracious 2016!
Love Azania.

P.S. Emoji included. :-)
